Forest Light Series
Late one fall afternoon, I was driving south on a country road in the Muskoka area of Ontario. I happened upon an opening in the woods along the road where the low sun and light created dazzling effects of dappled light on the trees and foreground. After experimenting in watercolours first, as the was my primary medium at the time, I was inspired to try to express the effect on a large canvas, 48 x 60, rather than experimenting with a few small studies. The series that evolved from that moment became my signature series, The Forest Light Series. Since then I have explored various times of day, mist and a variety of canvas sizes. The series is particularly powerful in large format but the smaller paintings have a mood and delicacy of their own.
Often I paint in a series and the Forest Light Series was conceived and named while I was working on a Master degree in Visual Art, primarily studio practise and theory, at Vermont College, Norwich University. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Forest Light Series and I am developing a new body of work on the theme which I will make available to my galleries as they come available. Vermont like Canada has inspiring woods and lakes and beautiful lighting so I also had an opportunity to research some reference material on location in Vermont.
Each Forest Light painting is unique and there are no reproductions. All reference materials, photography and sketches and observation are my own along with a generous dose of imagination. I am known for this series and when my paintings are available at auction or on the secondary market with galleries the theme is noted.
The Forest Light Series paintings have an abstracted feeling when viewed up close and represent a very contemporary approach. The various meanings of trails, forests and trees as a metaphor for the human experience are defined in The Meaning of Forests. The Forest Light Series has been collected nationally and internationally. All paintings are original. All images on the website are copyright protected.
